    [FEATURE] Expenses Without Debt

    Why this feature?

In a multi-person budget, some expenses are shared because they come from a collective source: a joint account, a pooled fund, or a shared house kitty.

In that case, the right user experience is not “who owes whom?”. It is “record one expense, split it clearly, and do not generate debt”.

That is exactly what this flow does.

What it allows you to do

An expense without debt is still an expense. You enter one total amount, select the people involved, define the split, and save.

Boney then keeps each participant's share visible in the budget while avoiding the usual debt logic. The result is simple:

    • one input
    • one clear split
    • no awkward settle-up messages for a payment that already came from a common source

    Usage examples

Paul and Marie share a joint account. Their €600 rent is paid from that account. They record one expense, split it 50/50, and each person keeps a clear €300 view without generating debt.

Or imagine a four-person flatshare. The €40 internet bill is paid from a pooled fund. One expense is enough to divide it into four €10 shares, with no duplicate entry and no debt to settle afterwards.

    How it works

When creating a new expense in a multi-person budget, the default behavior is to generate debt.

If this expense comes from a collective source, turn on Do not generate debt.

    Then:

    • enter the total amount
    • select the participants
    • define the split
    • save the expense

You can preview the breakdown before confirming. Once saved, the linked entries stay aligned if you edit or delete the expense later.

    Best practices

    • Use this for purchases paid from a collective source: rent, internet, groceries, shared subscriptions.
    • Keep personal purchases as personal expenses, even during shared activities.
    • If the split is not equal, define a custom split once and save it clearly.

    FAQ

Is this the same as “someone paid for everyone”?

No. This flow is for expenses that should not generate debt because the money already came from a collective source.

Can I change the split later?

Yes. Editing the expense updates the linked entries so the history stays consistent.

Does this work for two people only?

No. It works for couples, flatshares, trips, and any budget with multiple participants.
