Who owes whom
Enter shared expenses (who paid, who participates, how much) and get the minimal set of transfers to settle all debts in one pass.
How shared debt works
When several people share expenses over time, it's hard to track who owes whom. Instead of paying each other back after every expense, you accumulate a ledger and settle at the end of the week or month. The calculator computes each person's net balance (paid minus should-pay) and finds the minimum number of transfers to clear all debts.
How the calculator works
Each expense is split equally among its participants. The person who paid is the spender; the others owe their share. After all expenses, each participant has a net balance: positive means they're owed money (creditor), negative means they owe money (debtor). The debt engine then matches debtors to creditors to produce the shortest transfer list.
Worked example
Alex paid €80 for dinner (shared with Sam). Sam paid €30 for groceries (shared with Alex). How do they settle?
| Name | Paid by | Shared with | Net balances |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alex | €80 | €55 | +€25 (creditor) |
| Sam | €30 | €55 | −€25 (debtor) |
Sam pays Alex €25.
